Citigroup could be surprise winner in stress tests

(Reuters) - Citigroup Inc may be a surprise winner when the Federal Reserve reveals the results of bank stress tests designed to gauge the health of the biggest U.S. banks.

The third-largest U.S. bank may receive permission to increase its penny-per-share quarterly dividend, analysts say, something long-suffering shareholders have been waiting for since the payout was slashed after a series of government bailouts.

Stronger banks such as Wells Fargo & Co are also likely to see another round of dividend increases, while Bank of America Corp and other banks still trying to rebuild their capital, such as Regions Financial Corp, will be left out.

The results, expected by Thursday, could boost stock prices for some banks, and undercut this year's appreciation for others, analysts said.

Analysts generally expect banks to pass the tests, which are meant to show how they would perform in an economic crisis. But investors will be closely watching how generous the Fed is in allowing banks to increase dividends and repurchase shares.

Bank stocks have surged so far this year, with the KBW Bank Index <.bkx> climbing 16 percent. But investor sentiment could get a reality check from the results, said Sterne Agee analyst Todd Hagerman.

The Fed is seen being more conservative than it was in 2011 in approving dividend increases and share buybacks. Regulators continue to worry about the health of the financial system, the global economic outlook and future earnings growth, he said.

"Given that conservatism, I think it's premature for these companies to be thinking about releasing so much of the hard-earned capital they accumulated such a short time ago," Hagerman said.

Banks whose shares could be boosted by the results include PNC Financial Services Inc , Fifth Third Bancorp , Wells Fargo, BB&T Corp and US Bancorp , Hagerman said.

On the other hand, Bank of America, SunTrust Banks Inc , KeyCorp and Zions Bancorp could see their stocks negatively affected.

In this year's version of the stress tests, the Fed is once again examining 19 large banks to determine whether they would be able to maintain a sufficient level of capital in a worst-case scenario that includes 13 percent unemployment. In addition, the Fed is also subjecting another 12 banks with assets between $50 billion and $100 billion to less stringent reviews. Unlike last year's tests, the Fed plans to publicly disclose details of how the banks performed.

In its instructions to the 19 banks, the Fed said it expects capital plans submitted by the financial institutions to reflect "conservative common dividend payout ratios." Payout ratios of more than 30 percent of earnings will receive "particularly close scrutiny," the central bank said.

"NO-MAN'S LAND"

A Fed-approved dividend increase would be a significant stamp of approval for Citigroup, one of the most damaged financial institutions during the financial crisis. The New York-based bank could raise its quarterly dividend to 10 cents a share from its nominal level of a penny, according to some analysts.

"We think the market is still underappreciating (Citigroup's) capital return potential," Oppenheimer analyst Chris Kotowski said in a recent report. Citigroup has the greatest potential of the major banks of positively surprising Wall Street, he said.

Stock buybacks could also be ahead for Citigroup.

"Some of our peers were buoyed by the ability to buy back shares, an option we lacked," Chief Executive Vikram Pandit wrote in his letter to shareholders in Citi's 2012 annual report, released last week.

"In the final analysis, the value that we all want to see reflected in our share price will be most apparent when we can meaningfully return capital to shareholders," wrote Pandit.

Nomura analyst Glenn Schorr said a dividend increase for Citigroup would be a sign that the company is getting control of its balance sheet and starting to build capital. The company still has work to do to finish cleaning up its mistakes, he said.

To be sure, Citigroup will still trail its other big bank peers significantly in returning capital to shareholders.

According to Raymond James analysts, Wells Fargo could get the go-ahead to increase its annual dividend to 72 cents per share from 48 cents, while JPMorgan Chase & Co may get permission to go to $1.30 from $1. Both banks are also expected to buy back more shares.

Bank of America, though, will not be among the banks boosting payouts.

After the Fed denied its request for a dividend increase last year, the bank's executives did not ask to raise its penny per share dividend or buy back shares. Instead, the bank in the past year has focused on improving its capital measures by selling non-core businesses, shedding risky assets and improving earnings.

Last year's rejection was an embarrassment for CEO Brian Moynihan and highlighted the challenges the bank faced in recovering from its 2008 Countrywide Financial acquisition, which saddled the bank with mortgage-related loses and lawsuits.

Bank of America finds itself in a "no-man's land," in which it has no need to raise fresh capital by selling stock to investors but it trails its peers in meeting new international capital standards, said Marty Mosby, bank analyst at Guggenheim Partners. The bank should meet these so-called Basel III standards before a fully phased-in date of January 1, 2019, but other banks will get there faster, he said.

An important thing for investors to watch in the results will be the Fed's determination of the bank's potential mortgage losses, Mosby said. One of the key questions about the bank is how much it will ultimately have to pay to cover requests by investors to buy back soured mortgages the bank sold them during the housing boom.

Among other major banks, Goldman Sachs Group Inc executives have not indicated whether they have asked for a dividend increase or the ability to buy back more shares. After last year's tests, Goldman redeemed shares held by Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway Inc .

Morgan Stanley has said it is focused on increasing the firm's investment in its Morgan Stanley Smith Barney brokerage joint venture.

The War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebrations are well underway, and the Fort Erie planning committee is preparing for a very exciting and event-filled 2012.

Project Coordinator John Johnston met with the Times this week to highlight some of the upcoming events that will be part of the lengthy historic celebration.

The biggest event happening in Fort Erie this year will be the Grande Military Parade, taking place on June 23. There will be over 50 military marching bands, including the Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces, along with many others from across North America and the U.K. Following the parade will be a Military Tattoo held at Old Fort Erie, and the night will end with a fireworks display.

The only funding that has been solidified at this point is $200,000 from the Town of Fort Erie, approved in the budget process earlier this year, and some other small sponsorships and government grants.

Hoping more money is filtered through from both the federal and provincial governments, Johnston says the show must go on, and would like to extend an invitation to the people of the region to enter a float or display in the parade.

"This is going to be a major community event and there is room for more participation," said Johnston. Entry forms for floats and displays can be found on the Bicentennial?s website at www.forterie1812.ca.

With June right around the corner, there is a lot of planning that still needs to be done, but things are looking pretty good.

"We still have time, but time is passing," said Johnston, who also anticipates the grand parade to be the biggest War of 1812 bicentennial event held in North America in 2012.

In August, the bicentennial committee will also present another theatre production at the Old Fort Erie Welcome Centre.

This will be a follow-up to the Lion and the Eagle, which was performed during the month of January as the official launch of Fort Erie?s 1812 bicentennial celebrations.

Selling out all eight of its performances, Johnston said the play was a huge success, and wishes more people in the community were given the chance to experience it.

Johnston did say that the committee was a little disappointed in the lack of interest and participation from schools in the area.

While some have been great supporters and have shown a definite interest in being involved, others appear to not see the significance of this once in a lifetime celebration.

?This is the biggest national historical event since Centennial Year?, said Johnston. ?We would hope the schools see this as an opportunity and participate.?

Slowly there seems to be more interest as the events begin to unfold, including on Facebook and Twitter where people are beginning to provide comments and ask questions about upcoming events.

"A lot of people are becoming interested," he said.

The next event is a Canada versus U.S. hockey game on April 7 at the Leisureplex.

The game starts at 7pm, and tickets are available at the door, $8 for adults and $5 for kids. To help show our Canadian spirit, kids under 12 dressed in Canadian apparel get in free.

Exclusive: Google leans on developers to use payment service

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc has been pressuring applications and mobile game developers to use its costlier in-house payment service, Google Wallet, as the Internet search giant tries to emulate the financial success of Apple Inc's iOS platform.

Google warned several developers in recent months that if they continued to use other payment methods - such as PayPal, Zong and Boku - their apps would be removed from Android Market, now known as Google Play, according to developers, executives and investors in mobile gaming and payment sectors.

Developers say the Internet search giant is trying to simplify consumer payments, hoping apps-buying will rise and offset their higher costs. Google's payment service charges a higher cut per transaction than some rivals'. But the move also suggests Google is using its powerful position in the mobile apps market to promote an in-house offering.

"Although this move by Google might seem high-handed, it reduces the friction for purchases inside Android apps and therefore makes users more valuable," said Hugo Troche, chief executive of Appsperse, a cross-promotion network for app discovery.

A Google spokesman said on Friday that its policy had not changed, pointing to a clause in its Android developers agreement that requires developers who are charging for applications and downloads to do so using an authorized payment processor. Android Developer Program policies include two exceptions related to purchases of physical goods and digital content such as music that can be consumed outside apps.

The spokesman declined to comment on whether Google had stepped up enforcement of its policies in recent months.

Android Market, or Google Play as it is now known, is the company's answer to Apple's apps store, where consumers browse and buy or download everything from games and music to individual software or applications. Google wants Google Wallet to be the dominant way that people pay for anything on this platform.

In one email sent to a developer in late August, Google said the developer had 30 days to comply, otherwise the developer's apps would be "suspended" from Android Market. Reuters obtained a copy of the email this week.

"They told people that if they used other payment services they would be breaking the terms of use," said Si Shen, founder and chief executive of Papaya, a social gaming network on Android. "Whether it's right or wrong, we have to follow the rules."

Papaya placed social games on Android more than two years ago. At that time, the search company's payment service - now known as Google Wallet - was not available for Android app payments, Shen explained.

She said Papaya used PayPal, owned by eBay Inc, and Zong, a mobile payments company that has since been acquired by eBay. Papaya has now dropped PayPal and Zong in favor of Google Wallet for in-app billing, she said.

"If we had a choice, the freedom to choose which billing service, then that's even better. But if we have to follow the rules, we will," she added. "I want to maintain a very good relationship with Google. We are very collaborative. It's very important to the business."

MOTIVES

The initiative is important for Google. While Android Market has been a hit in terms of the number of smartphones using the platform, there has not been a commensurate increase in purchase activity by users.

In early 2011, Android platform manager Eric Chu told a conference that while the number of Android smartphone users was surging, the number of purchases of paid apps in the Android Market was not doing nearly as well, Forbes reported.

This is partly because the buying experience has been varied and confusing for users - reducing the chance that they will go through with a purchase, something known as conversion.

By pushing all app developers to use Google's payment system, the experience should be simpler, increasing conversion.

"On Android it used to be laissez faire - you could use any payment provider you liked," said Todd Hooper, chief executive of Zipline Games.

"It's probably naive of developers to think they could keep choosing different payment providers," he added. "If purchasing on Android is all over the place, that is worrying."

Apple's iOS platform generates higher conversion rates mainly because the company required developers to use its own payment system from day one, according to Hooper and others.

"This is one of the things that has helped Apple succeed," said Charles Hudson of Bionic Panda Games, an Android-focused mobile social games company in San Francisco. "Every single developer is using the Apple payment system. Google sees the benefits that provides for the Apple platform and wants to create a similar system."

When Bionic Panda started on Android Market about a year ago, Google Wallet was not available, so the company used PayPal initially, Hudson said. It switched exclusively to Google Wallet around the spring of 2011, he added.

Developers using Google Wallet typically have to pay Google a 30 percent cut of revenue from purchases - higher than the cut taken by rival third-party payment services.

But Hudson and other developers said this may be worth it, if conversion rates increase.

When Bionic Panda dropped PayPal it lost some customers, but there was "an overall lift in conversion and monetization on a per-user basis," Hudson said.

"Without having to chose your payment option it's closer to the one-click experience of the Apple iOS platform," he added. "The convenience factor would outweigh customer losses."

"Miss Fortune", a new work commissioned jointly by Covent Garden and the Bregenz Festival in Austria, is by British composer Judith Weir and transports an old Sicilian folk tale into the present day.

In the updated version, Tina, the Miss Fortune of the title, falls on hard times after she breaks away from her wealthy parents when they lose most of their riches.

She encounters gangs, a kebab van and a sweatshop before love and the lottery offer the possibility of a better life.

But it all depends on Fate, who pulls the strings with the help of a sinister group of young "enforcers" played by the Soul Mavericks dance troupe.

Ajay, one of six members of the award-winning group taking part in the production, called the venture "untouched territory.

"At the end of the day it's art, so everyone is going to have different opinions," the 25-year-old told Reuters in between rehearsals at Covent Garden, the central London home of a Royal Opera House more used to ballet than breakdancing.

"I really loved doing the show. It's something completely different."

Weir said the breakdancers were not originally her idea, but were suggested to allow Fate to manipulate events on stage.

"LIFETIME MOMENT"

While the theme of losing and winning a fortune resonates with audiences today, the composer and librettist did not want her work to be seen as a social commentary.

"It's not very interesting just to do this polarity between the filthy rich and the very poor, although we caricature those in a way in this piece, but there are also people in the middle," Weir said.

The composer called the show a "lifetime moment" that was rare in a world where new works were few and far between. "The chances are so rare to do it, and the big question is how people build up their craft?

"There are a certain amount of opportunities to do smaller scale work and I think that can often be really great, but to have all the resources of one of the biggest opera houses, it really does not happen to people very often."

Emma Bell, singing the lead role, stressed the importance of commissioning new music.

(Reuters) - One-time financial powerhouse Lehman Brothers emerged from bankruptcy on Tuesday and is now a liquidating company whose main business in the coming years will be paying back its creditors and investors.

Lehman, whose September 2008 collapse is often regarded as the height of the financial crisis, will start distributing what it expects to be a total of about $65 billion to creditors on April 17, it said in a statement.

That first group of payments to creditors, many of whom lost money in its collapse 3-1/2 years ago, will be at least $10 billion, Lehman has said previously.

The move is a legal milestone, but does not indicate the immediate end of Lehman Brothers. The company will continue to operate, in the same midtown Manhattan headquarters it was in before bankruptcy, albeit on fewer floors, as it sells off its remaining assets before finally closing up shop.

"What our people were doing yesterday and what they are doing today has not changed," said Steven Cohn, an employee of restructuring firm Alvarez & Marsal who has worked as Lehman's treasurer since the bankruptcy began.

Now, however, the company has freedom to operate more like any other company outside of bankruptcy, he said. For instance, now that it is out of bankruptcy, Lehman no longer needs to ask court permission for every asset sale.

At the peak of its bankrupt operations, about 735 people were working at Lehman, compared with about 433 in January of this year. That's down from the 25,000 people Lehman Brothers employed before bankruptcy when Chief Executive Richard Fuld still ran the show . A new board will oversee the post-bankrupt company, Lehman said.

Lehman's bankruptcy exit comes amid economic uncertainty, as signs of a U.S. economic rebound, with lower unemployment, are tempered by a massive Greek debt restructuring and gloomy outlook for many European economies.

Still, it is far from the economic crisis that had engulfed the world's economies in 2008 when Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc filed its record $639 billion bankruptcy, 1,268 days ago. Its businesses around the world collapsed, and investors from the smallest towns to the largest pension funds lost money.

Lehman's fall rocked the foundations of global financial markets and contributed to the unfolding of the Great Recession.

PAYING BACK CREDITORS

Some of Lehman's most public bankruptcy negotiations focused on its reorganization plan, as it worked to get investor groups, including Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs Group Inc and hedge fund investors such as Paulson & Co, to agree on how much it would pay back each class of creditor.

In the end, they agreed that creditors, depending on their type of debt, will receive from about 21 cents to 28 cents on the dollar. Creditors had asserted more than $300 billion in claims.

"It was an extremely difficult and enormously time-consuming case," Harvey Miller, Lehman's lead attorney, told Reuters. "I had to increase my high blood pressure pills."

Bankruptcy Judge James Peck approved the creditor payback plan in December and Lehman has since been settling claims and selling assets. The company, which has about $35 billion in cash, is due to make a second payment to creditors in September and then will continue to make periodic distributions in the future as it sells off its remaining estimated $30 billion worth of assets.

Among the most notable of those holdings is the Archstone apartment real estate company.

CLAIMS, LAWSUITS REMAIN

While daily bankruptcy supervision is beh ind Lehman, the court process will continue for years due to various claims and lawsuits, adding to the more than 26,000 entries already on its court docket. The costs will continue to mount as well, although at a slower pace. As of January, it had spent more than $1.58 billion on professional fees, including lawyers and advisers.

I told myself I would try to destroy it in any way I could. I tried covering it up the best I could, but it was too dominant, too powerful for me to handle.

And so the battle began.

As I saw Marty expanding in size, I went along and pierced it the next day. I wanted to squeeze the life out of it, watch it suffer and succumb to my superior forces. Marty was in searing pain, as if begging me to not hurt it anymore. At first, I thought I had won easily. However, in contrast to my fantasy, it took even more days to demolish such an invincible creature.

The more that I had poked or scratched Marty, the more obnoxious it seemed to grow. I apprehended later that if I left it completely alone, it would have slowly stopped annoying me and left me in peace.

That was when I realized the most crucial life lesson I probably would not have learned any other way. Being an 11 year old, I was still trying to make sense of the natural processes of life and what it meant to grow up. As loathsome as Marty's attendance was to me, I learned to change my mind about our time together. When Marty mysteriously left, I was overjoyed, but soon observed that Marty did not only target me, but also my friends.

I did not feel so bad after realizing this.

Marty was life-changing. I see its time with me in a new light now, with Marty as more of a constructive friend. Its short appearance in my life left the deepest mark. This is because at the time, I was not accustomed to handling different, troubling situations until I met Marty. If I ever had a problem, I would tell my parents, or an adult, and they would solve it for me. However, with Marty, it was different.

Marty became the bridge to my maturity. Through this experience, I learned that I am the one who needs to overcome my own problems. Problems are shameless because they happen to everyone. I learned to deal with imperfections and to compromise in order to find solutions for them. I learned that no one is perfect.

I found out that coping with a complication such as Marty was achievable even when I thought it would be the impossible. I was able to coexist with a problem in peace. This brought me to realize that all problems do come with solutions no matter what the circumstances are.

After all, Marty was only a pimple.

The bloodshed late Tuesday in the restive northwestern region of Xinjiang came at a sensitive time, ahead of next week's opening of China's national legislature, when authorities tighten security nationwide to prevent anything that would mar the annual session.

Officials and state media said the bloodshed started when assailants attacked civilians with knives on a commercial street in Yecheng city, killing 10 people; police fatally shot two of the attackers, the official accounts said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei called the attackers "terrorists" and said they attacked innocent civilians, "cruelly killing several of them in an appalling manner."

However, Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the German-based World Uyghur Congress, said that the violence in Yecheng ? called Kargilik by?Uighurs?? erupted because local residents "could no longer bear China's systematic repression," and have been denied outlets for peaceful protest.

He said local?Uighurs?told him seven armed Chinese security personnel were killed and that three people were shot to death. He said two more people were killed but did not provide any detail of those deaths. He said 10 people were injured, including two seriously hurt, and that police have detained 84 people. Police have sealed off the area, he said.

The government has failed to win over?Uighurs?and other ethnic minorities through policies to boost economic growth and incomes as it increases police presence and controls religious practices to deter displays of separatism. China's ethnic Tibetan regions have also been unsettled in recent months by scattered demonstrations and clashes with authorities, as well as self-immolations in protest against the government's policies.

"At present, Xinjiang is on the path of a leap-forward development," Hong, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, told reporters in Beijing. "We firmly oppose a handful of terrorists and separatists in sabotaging the peaceful development, good order, and unity.

A Communist Party official in Yecheng county, who declined to give his name, said that aside from the two assailants shot on the spot, all the remaining attackers were later captured by police. He refused to answer further questions. Calls to police offices in Yecheng went unanswered.

Censors blocked postings about the attack on microblogs. Searches on Sina Corporation's popular Weibo service returned the message: "In accordance with relevant laws, regulations and policies, 'Xinjiang Yecheng' search results were not shown."

Sporadic attacks occur in Xinjiang ? a region of oil and gas deposits, vast deserts, and towering mountains that abuts Central Asia ? despite a smothering security presence imposed following 2009 riots in the regional capital of Urumqi in which almost 200 people died. The riots pitted?Uighurs?against migrants from China's majority Han.

Much of the violence has been centered in Yecheng and other oasis cities in southern Xinjiang, a heartland of Uighur?culture. A group of?Uighurs?stormed a police station in the city of Hotan to the east of Yecheng on July 18 and took hostages, killing four. On July 30 and 31,?Uighurs?in Kashgar to the west hijacked a truck, set a restaurant on fire and stabbed people in the street. Authorities said 14 of the attackers were shot by police in Hotan, and five assailants were killed in the violence in Kashgar.

China says those events were organized terror attacks, but overseas?Uighur?groups say they were anti-government riots carried out by angry citizens.?Uighur?(pronounced WEE'-gur) activists and security analysts blame the violence on economic marginalization and restrictions on?Uighur?culture and the Muslim religion that are breeding frustration and anger among young?Uighurs.

Chinese authorities have offered little evidence to back up their claims of outside involvement and rarely provide details on arrests or punishment of the suspects. Tight information controls and the remoteness of the area, more than 2,175 miles (3,500 kilometers) west of Beijing, ensure that the circumstances surrounding such incidents often remain murky.

The government has periodically closed unregistered Islamic schools and study sessions, seeing them as a wellspring for radical separatism. The World Uyghur Congress has said that authorities in Xinjiang's Aksu region in recent weeks confiscated hundreds of tracts and videos and detained more than 100 people.

The well-known and renowned NFL shield has certainly made a name for itself in the sports world. The crest is not just a representation of the team but also a symbol for victory, glory, aggression, loyalty and celebration.

It is a symbol that has united football fans from all over the country and has brought them down to one stadium. When it was formed in 1920, it started off with only eleven teams but now it is managing more than thirty two teams from all over America.

History of the NFL Football Logo Design:

The Old Symbol:

This symbol was created in 1940, two decades after the founding of NFL and has represented the football federation till 2008. It consists of a crest with 25 stars and an image of a football in the upper half of the image. The football in the image has often been nicknamed as the NFL hamburger due to its resemblance to the famous American snack. The bottom half of the design caters the team name initials. The crest is created with only three colors; red, dark blue and white which makes the image sophisticated and eye catching. These colors are also found in the national flag which gives the design a patriotic touch. The stars in the emblem are also illustrated for the same reasons; besides adding a hint of glamour to the design. The text has been scripted in thick and straight fonts with the letter L curved at the end that adds an artistic touch to the monogram.

The New Symbol:

In 2008, NFL created a leaner, meaner and darker version of their old emblem. In the new monogram, the crest was created to be slightly thinner and taller which the shade of blue going darker. The subtle changes in the emblem were made so that famous NFL would be able to update itself according to time but would not lose the traditional and historic touch that the corporation feels pride over. The stars in the image have also decreased to 8 from 25 to represent the 8 divisions that NFL caters to. The image of the football in the design is also made to look more 3 dimensional which no longer resemble a hamburger. While the colors and the basic shape remains the same, the text has lost its previous curviness and has been replaced with a sharp edged text that depicts professionalism and aggression.

This symbol has been an inspiration to many American football teams like the NY Giants logo, Minnesota Vikings football logo and the Houston Texas logo.

In conclusion, NFL has created a brand mark that contains all the important elements that any national emblem should have; it is a symbol of history, tradition, patriotism and pride that any American footballs fan would be proud to wear.

T.V. Shows Take a New Spin on Fatherhood | Men&#39;s Divorce Law Blog

The ?new baby? episode has been a long-standing tradition for many T.V. shows.? However, current shows like Justified, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and more are handling pregnancy and fatherhood in new ways.

The third season of the acclaimed series Justified now shares a common link with decades of television that came before it, it will have a ?new baby? episode.? The on-screen pregnancy began over five decades ago when Lucille Ball?s real-life pregnancy was capitalized upon in the series I Love Lucy.? Ratings soared, and in the 1953 episode ?Lucy Goes to the Hospital? was viewed by 44 million Americans.? In comparison, the presidential inauguration of Dwight Eisenhower, which aired the following day, only drew 29 million viewers.? While the ?new baby? episode is a significantly less novel concept than it was a few decades ago it can still be a draw for viewers, like when The Office beat out Grey?s Anatomy when Jim and Pam had a baby.

But an interesting, divergent trend has emerged in recent TV dramas: a subdued, sometimes all-but-unremarked-upon approach to the birth of a child. AMC?s Mad Men and Breaking Bad have each seen their lead protagonists grappling with new fatherhood?going through the full arc of the experience, from pregnancy to birth?but in a way that hasn?t significantly alter the either show?s overarching narrative.

Justified has more in common with Mad Men and Breaking Bad than its general approach to the ?new baby? plot device. Each of the show?s pregnancies was unplanned, and all three babies are potential casualties of the fundamentally unstable unions that created them. What we?re seeing is a new approach to what a new baby means on television. These babies aren?t characters unto themselves; they?re plot devices, which threaten to draw our leading men away from their respective callings (the law, advertising, and methamphetamine, for those keeping track at home). There?s a reason that ?new baby? episodes tend to feature more heavily in sitcoms; where babies offer a host of new opportunities for jokes in comedies, they rarely offer more than obstacles to be overcome in dramas.

Other drama-oriented shows which have, or are currently featuring a new baby/new father device include Dexter and The Walking Dead.
